Information for Authors
About
The Magazine
Conscientious Aquarist is an on-line
magazine dedicated to the sharing of information about the aquatic hobby.
Content is intended to promote the husbandry of aquatic animals in a responsible
and ethical manner. Material presented includes information on freshwater,
marine, reef, reptile, amphibian, and pond care, animal selection and general
husbandry.
Our intent is to provide content which
will inspire the beginning hobbyist, encourage the intermediate hobbyist, and
provoke the advanced hobbyist to investigate new areas of the art and science of
aquatic husbandry. Of foremost importance is that this magazine serves as a
forum by hobbyists, for hobbyists, and that the content be presented in a
straightforward, friendly, and non-intimidating manner. Particular emphasis will
be placed on a “how I do it” point of view, without excessively scientific
material, which might be intimidating to a novice hobbyist.
Article
Submission Guidelines
Articles should be submitted via email
as an attachment in a Microsoft Word document. The email should include the
author’s name, address, email address, website URL (if applicable), and a
brief “autobiography” of the author. We encourage contributors to present a
“casual” autobiography covering their hobby experience and interests, not
simply a “resume” of hobby and academic achievements.
We welcome submissions from hobbyists
and authors at all levels of experience. Be sure to include any photos,
illustrations, and artwork that is appropriate for the article. An appropriate
bibliography and list of references are encouraged. Since we have
access to WetWebMedia’s vast library of photos, please advise if you require a
specific photo or photos to be included in your piece, and we will do our best
to locate and include them as needed.
Material accepted for publication will
be subject to editorial revision as required, at the discretion of the editors,
in order to meet publication standards. All editorial contributions need not be
“exclusive”.
Electronic/Digital photos should be of
high quality and should be numbered, or provided with captions, if desired.
Photos should be sent in a jpg format, with a resolution of 72dpi or greater.
If photos are imbedded in a Word document, please send separate JPEG's. Photos
should be unedited and uncompressed. Please note that not all photos provided
may be utilized.

Payment
Once accepted for publication, we will
make payment directly to the author at the rate currently in use
($150.00-$200.00 per article as of 5/1/04). The author should specify if payment
should be made via check or PayPal.
Conscientious Aquarist
shall retain the right to use the material used, including text, photos,
and illustrations in archived back issues of the publication or for educational
purposes on www.wetwebmedia.com.
All authors will be appropriately credited. The author will retain all
subsequent rights beyond those described. By submitting material to
Conscientious Aquarist, the author is expressing a warranty that the material is
unpublished, original, and does not infringe upon the rights of others.
Conscientious Aquarist cannot assume
responsibility for loss or damage of submitted material. Every effort will be
made to properly store all material submitted. However, it is our recommendation
that the author retain copies of said materials.

write up for the Heteractis Magnifica I have had for 1 1/2 years.

If you are still working on it, let me know. I didn't want to send anything
until I knew exactly what the deal was or who to send the write up to.
Sorry, don't mean to seem pushy, I just needed to know to plan time for it since
now I have another offer to be paid to answer posts for the web page I am
working for, and I need to plan around that and manage my time a little this
month. You understand!!!!! :)

Just shoot me an email that says "working on it, we will get hold of you when we
are ready" just so I know it is in the works.
I have this guy I know who wants me to help him organize his new fish store
too. I may only be able to help him just a little if that!
Okay, so take care, and one fish question...........
My hippo tang who is about 7" long (had him/her since 3") is pestering everyone
(fairy wrasses, clowns, damsels, Tuskfish juvenile) by chasing them a bit every
time he/she sees them. But not all the time. I was wondering if adding a pink
tail trigger (planktivore) or another larger, reef safe fish to calm
her/him down. Maybe a pyramid butterflyfish. It is not a
terrorizing "picking", just an "I am in charge". I am worried about my
juvenile tusk being traumatized too much. One morning I had to look for
and nudge him out into the open. It isn't often, but I am worried this behavior
may escalate as he/she grows. Everyone is fat and in a 150 gallon tank with
live Caulerpa that the hippo can eat all day, so, I do not see that the tang
should be so territorial, though in the wild they occupy a 6' area (Hawaiian
diver has seen this).

I won't worry if I don't have to. I don't want to add another herbivore tang
and stress the hippo out. He/she never seems to have crypt, so I know it is not
stressed. I thought about a yellow eye kole for the diatoms, etc that my hippo
doesn't touch. It was suggested to get a smaller one so the hippo wouldn't feel
threatened, but Koles are skittish as well. (I can get one straight from the
supplier, so there is no starving and long stressful shipping) thanks a ton! A
hippo TON!

Just curious what wet web pays for this type of submission.
<Accepted articles are paid 150 w/o graphics, 200 with. Additionally, I
encourage folks to make submission of the same material to the print 'zines>

I thought I was supposed to wait for an email as to where to send it and how
much it would pay. Just like a painter won't paint your house unless he knows
how much he is being paid. Same idea! lol! I understand that the content has to
be valid and accurate, by no means would I expect to be paid unless the
article met your web site's criteria.

Writing For Conscientious Aquarist... 9/28/05
I recently found The Puffer Forum site and I saw a post there stating that
you are looking for articles on puffers. I've kept green spotteds, Dwarf
Freshwater Puffers, Figure Eights, and three species of Sharpnose (Canthigaster
sp.) Puffers. I'd love to do general writing (feeding, proper housing, etc.) or
specifics on any of the above-mentioned species (especially C. travancorius and
the Canthigaster sp.)--if you are interested, just let me know what you need.
I've done informational writing before professionally and can provide references
and/or examples.

The text can be in Word, Wordpad, WordPerfect, etc., even in the body of an e-mail if you want. Whichever you choose, please send it in unformatted
plain text (Universal Font, No fancy headers, No justification, etc.). If there is special formatting that you would like to have applied, let us know
and we can apply it on our end.
Thanks to the Bill Gates conspiracy for world domination, photos imbedded in Microsoft documents behave in some crazy ways, so photos should be sent
separately. If you are comfortable at editing your own photos, please go ahead and crop them as you see fit, but don't re-size.
Our mailbox limit is 10mb, so if you have a super duper digital camera that produces
generous image files, please send the images to this address and I
will upload them directly to our work file on WWM.
