Ten spp. acc. to ICLARM, one more @Allen et al... incl. niger...

Chaetodontoplus ballinae Whitley, 1959, Ballina Angelfish (?). Not yet used in the aquarium interest. Known only from a few specimens from isolated areas off the east coast of Australia including a seamount of Lord Howe Island.

Chaetodontoplus caeruleopunctatus Yasund & Tominaga 1976, the Blue-Spotted Angelfish (2). Sometimes offered from the only area it is yet to be found in, the Philippines, especially off Cebu. To six inches in length. Aquarium image.

Chaetodontoplus chrysocephalus (Bleeker 1854), Orange-Faced Angelfish (2). Possibly a variant or male of C. septentrionalis, or a cross between it and C. melanosoma. Western Pacific Ocean, Japan to Indonesia.

I got to get out more often

Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus (Waite 1900), the Conspicuous Angelfish (1). A beautiful and expensive centerpiece for folks with a large aquarium (hundreds of gallons). To about a foot in length. Australian east coast out to New Caledonia. Aquarium photos of adult by RMF and 17 cm. individual by Hiroyuki Tanaka.

Chaetodontoplus duboulayi (Gunther 1867), the Scribbled Angelfish (1). A more common import from the genus. Best started at 4-5 inches to wean over wild foods (sea squirts, sponges). To twelve inches overall in the wild. North coast of Australia to New Guinea. Below: One inch and adult aquarium and Airlie Beach, QLD pix by RMF. 3 cm. by Hiroyuki Tanaka at right.

Chaetodontoplus melanosoma (Bleeker 1853), Black Velvet Angelfish (2). Variable in initial health from wild. Best to leave at the dealer's a good week or two. Indonesia on up to southern Japan. To eight inches long. 8 cm. individual by Hiroyuki Tanaka and 15 cm. by RMF.

Chaetodontoplus meredithi Kuiter 1989, Queensland Yellow-Tail Angelfish (2). Very similar to the Personifer (C. personifer), but with a much brighter yellow tail. From the east coast of Australia. To ten inches in length. A juvenile and adult in Queensland, Australia and an adult near the surface feeding on a jelly off Heron Island, Australia.

Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus (Bloch 1787), the Vermiculated Angelfish, better known in the west as the Singapore Angel (2), the most commonly imported member of the genus, and at six inches maximum, one of the better choices. Western Pacific. Yes, it looks more like a Butterflyfish than an Angel. At right in Raja Ampat, Indo. Below: Aquarium, N. Sulawesi and Gili Air, Lombok, Indonesia images.

Chaetodontoplus niger Chan 1969, the Black Angelfish (?). Known only from a few specimens trawled up from deepwater off the west side of the Philippines and southern Japan.

Chaetodontoplus personifer (McCulloch 1914), the Personifer Angelfish (2)... which used to be "the" fish of this genus to have. To thirteen inches overall length. North coast of Australia, separate from the similar C. meredithi. Aq. pic.

Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis (Temminck & Schlegel 1844), the Blue-Striped Angelfish (1). Becoming a more common import. Ranging from southern China's coast up to southern Japan. To eight inches in the wild. Captive images of 2.5 and 16 cm. individuals by Hiroyuki Tanaka and a sub-adult in the middle by RMF.
