Rypticus saponaceus Gill 1861, the Blackgill Soapfish. Eastern Pacific; Sea of Cortez to Northern Peru, Galapagos. To thirteen inches in length. Somber, but of an interesting shape. Occasionally imported into pet-fish markets. Bonaire 8/09

Scarus taeniopterus Desmarest 1831, the Princess Parrotfish. Western Atlantic; Bermuda to Brazil. To fourteen inches overall length. Likely the most commonly utilized species (of only a handful) used in the ornamental trade of this family. Due to better collection, holding and shipping more arrive in good condition and live. Though most are dead within a month of collection. Terminal phase individual in Bonaire
 
Scolymia lacera, Atlantic Mushroom Coral. Tropical West Atlantic. To six inches in diameter, most a couple of inches. Have prominent triangular septal teeth ridges. Bonaire 8/09
 
Scolymia cubensis (Milne Edwards and Haime 1849). Septa in 2,3 orders as spikes, pick-shapes. Found in the Caribbean and off of Brazil. Bonaire pic  8/09.
