Subject: Re: How does this look/sound (I need critiques)
Mike:
I would start with an important fact regarding the industry ( 90%(?) of
hobbyists leave within the first year due to the failure to keep organisms
alive. Many, in fact feel guilty for killing the organisms they love so
much, and immediately remove themselves from all aspects of the hobby. WWM
offers them a resource at no cost to answer questions regarding the hobby,
and offer them a support group to assist in their understanding of the
living world. Your support of WWM indirectly assists you by keeping people
in the hobby longer. For less than $7.00 a day, you can reach 10,000 people
daily, keeping our industry alive for the coming years.)
Pull out one of those fundraising letters you get from WWF or a group like
them, who zero in on the compassionate side of humans for contributions. I
know when I get one of those letters, I rarely get past the fisrt sentence.
So put your strongest arguments in the first paragragh.
Just a thought...

Is it possible for us to have a top position for the first month at the
right side pricing
of $200.00 so we can determine if the ROI we anticipate is indeed present?

Sponsor page update
Bob,
I was able to do a bit of work on the new sponsor page this morning. --->
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sponsor_page.htm
<Better and better all the time... Maybe we should ask the vendors/sponsors
themselves to supply/ok the spiel?>
It's still a work in progress (like everything), and I expect to make
improvements to it. Please feel free to add or subtract anything you wish. Just
don't try to resize anything yet as the quality of the banner will suffer.
<Mmm, maybe we can/could/should go back re-steal them from a source...>
I
will try and get banners from our sponsors that are all a uniform size. I'm
still as sick as a dog (no pun intended) and I probably will remain reclusive
this weekend because I don't want to infect anyone with this dastardly cold.
Talk with you soon.

Re: Sponsor Page
Bob,
I still have a bunch of work to do on this page and I can only do it from home,
so I will work on it when I can.
<Okay, no rush... it's your project... like to add a note on the Homepage and
even the left shared border re... very important element of our commercial
site/side>
I have a bad cold right now so I will probably
have plenty of time this weekend to work on it. I won't post it till it's done.
Talk with you soon.

Sponsor Page
Bob,
I think it would be a good idea to make up a sponsor page like the one on that
website you showed me to put our sponsors full size banners. I will make one up
and show it
<No need to show it to me... my addition: Please place a "blue
link" like the ones you've made on the HP stating that this IS the Sponsors
Page... on the... Homepage!>
before linking it up. I will also contact all of our sponsors to
let them know of this added feature. All of the other pages will remain the
same with the small banners on the right and big ones on top of the pages. Let
me know what you think about that idea.
<Sounds very... uhh, sound... Feeling better today? Di was bummed to find you

Will be adding disaquatics link/logo today!!! Want to make it over for bbq
chickens tonight? Bob F>

Bob,
Thanks for the invite but I am still feeling pretty crappy and possibly
contagious. Barbeque chicken sounds good though, I'll be thinking about that
while I'm eating chicken soup tonight. If I'm feeling better this weekend maybe
we can get together then and I can help out with Di's sites. Diana Gave me her
logon name and password to the Knop site but they didn't work. If I get those I
could probably work on that site here from work using the modem (which I can't
do with the WWM). I'll talk with you soon.
<Hotay Miguel. Get and be well my friend. Di's sites ought to be working (I
don't have the passwords, names...). Will cc her here. Be seeing you. Bob F>

Revolving Banners?!
>Re: revolving banners
>I have multiple ways to do this... we may want to set up a call and talk
Hi Bob,
I saw this and freaked (or sort of). Not all of us can handle constantly
revolving stuff from a neurological standpoint (in my case epilepsy).
In fact, someone else on wwf and I were discussing a
certain spinning graphic on reefcentral. Could he maybe have them spin
once or perhaps skip the spinning entirely.
<Thank you for this input... the proposal turns out to be more like a
"changing" banner... as in with Web Pages being changed, the same
"ad space" might be occupied by different ad content.>
BTW, I read the letter sent by Lenore's uncle-- what a letter!
I was instantly in tears.
<I cried as well.>

Re: WWM advert. sales experiment
This entire thing has to work in the shared borders of Frontpage 2000. We
have
had many a problem working with these shared borders. How large will the
typical file size be? A bunch of people have older browsers too. Will Java and
VB script work for these people using the older browser versions?

Re: WWM advert. sales experiment
I think what we have been shooting for with the appearance, look and feel of
the Wetwebmedia site is simplicity by design. We have purposely chosen to not
have any flashing, blinking, rotating, anything on the site, simply because it
is a distraction and an annoyance. When I look at the WWM site I see a
straightforward, simple, easy to use scheme. The WWM site is backwards
compatible with almost every browser ever made, and I think we should keep it
that way. But, I also like all of the new ideas everyone has and I am always
looking for ways to improve this fine website.
<Wish I would have written this... Maybe we can swap common appellations? You
can weigh the same and be shorter! Bob F>
Mike
Re: Water Container
Bob,
For the free month I got, I didn't get that many refferers from your domain. I
was looking at it from an advertising-cost/benefit point of view. At that time,
it didn't look right.
<Mmm, such slogans as "these things take time" and "that was
thin (slower times) this is now" come to mind>
Also, from my point of view, additional sponsors are going to dilute the value
of sponsors that are already on your site. As a web browser, I would only be
inclined to click on the marine center and custom aquatic link. Multiple
banners on the same pages are reputed to not work nearly as well for
sponsors/advertisers as rotating banners.
<Ugh, I hate those things>
Right now, we just went through four years of incredible growth. I think you
will agree with me when I say that need to make sure our current customers are
well taken care of before I work on getting more. I'm sure that as things
stabilize a bit, I will be looking to bring in more business and grow.
<Must be nice!>
Most importantly, let me develop little bit more of an "advertising
budget."
I'm sure I would do it at that time. Right now, one of my main focuses is
working to close out the year and seeing where marine depot stands financially.
We have a ton of sales, but we have been working hard all year on cutting costs
and getting the company to show a respectable level of profitability.
<I understand.>
Regardless, I think I'll join on at some point later just because I believe in
what it is and what it does for everybody. I don't think it will hurt many if
you had to discontinue it.
Ken

Re: Water Container
Bob,
> <Mmm, such slogans as "these things take time" and "that
was thin (slower
> times) this is now" come to mind>
I know. I know.
> <Ugh, I hate those things>
By rotating, I mean that when somebody visits they see only one randomly
generated banner. You should give them a try. Trust me. The results will be
better for the sponsors involved. How about this. I try it for two months.
First month, let's do it this way. I'll track refferals. Second month, let's
do the rotating banner. I'll track referrals and give you a report. This is
one way that allows more sponsors on, that doesn't burden the viewer with a
bunch of banners, that gives the viewer a fresh look most times they visit, and
that allows your site to look a little cleaner.
<Let me ask Mike.K, our designated marketing mgr. if he thinks this is a good
idea, test>
> <Must be nice!>
It is nice, but it would not have happened if I would have put sales volume high
in priority over service.
<Both are imminently important my friend. Bob Fenner>
Ken
MSNBC News Link: Online retailers see no holiday cheer
I agree. This growth will happen eventually. First and foremost people have
to
feel secure putting their credit card information on-line.
<Ludicrous... when anyone uses their credit card through any other means it
is just as, if not more possible that it can/will be compromised.>
Most people I talk
too, and the majority of articles I read, state that people still do not have
confidence in that. I personally do a bunch of my shopping and buying on-line,
as you do. We are in a small minority.
<I don't consider it/us small... and see the "change over"
happening very quickly... Who wants to drive around, stuck in traffic, possibly
murdered there, looking for products, services, comparing prices, features...
The Net is the future of this functionality>
Over the next several years I am
positive the number of people gaining confidence in on-line shopping will
increase but for now it is a novelty.
<Want to bet? I say a year, two tops for more than fifty percent of people to
have shopped, bought via the net. Bob F, who will be elsewhere by then... Where
will you be?>

<Ah, thank you for your interest. Compared with print ads we are amazingly

FAQs about WWM Website Sponsorship... so, here it is:
Hi, my name is Mike Kaechele and I work with Robert Fenner on the Wetwebmedia
website. He has forwarded along to me your interest in becoming a Wetwebmedia
sponsor. Below you will find more information. Please don't hesitate to contact
me if you need any more information and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks for showing interest in becoming an advertiser/sponsor on the Wetwebmedia
website. Our website has been in existence for over 2 years and it has a loyal
following that is continuing to grow every day. Currently we have over 2500
people per day from all over the world visiting our website and that number
keeps growing. You currently spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on
print advertising in the hobbyist/trade magazines that have limited exposure and
circulation. When you put your icon/logo on the Wetwebmedia website it is
visible to every visitor on every page they view. Your logo will also be a link
leading to your website and products. We currently have several sponsors logos
on the website and you can view them by visiting any page (other than the
Homepage). Website address- www.wetwebmedia.com.
We offer two areas for your logo on our website, the right sidebar and the top
border. The top border spot is larger and is the prime spot for an ad. The rate
for placement on the top border is $500 per month. The right sidebar is also
popular and the rates for placement there are only $200 per month. Just send me
an example of the logo that you wish to place on the site and I will place it
there for you to see.
By advertising on the Wetwebmedia website you will be exposed to far more
hobbyist/customers than the number who see your ads in the magazines, at a
fraction of the cost. Please let me know how you want to proceed and I look
forward to hearing from you soon.

Vince,
Thanks for showing interest in becoming an advertiser/sponsor on the Wetwebmedia
website. Our website has been in existence for over 2 years and it has a loyal
following
that is continuing to grow every day. Currently we have over 2500 people per day
from all
over the world visiting our website and that number keeps growing (statistics
available
on request). You currently spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on print
advertising in the hobbyist/trade magazines that have limited exposure and
circulation.
When you put your icon/logo on the Wetwebmedia website it is visible to every
visitor on
every page they view. Your logo will also be a link leading to your website and
products.
We have had a positive response from the many fine companies who have already
chosen to
become sponsors and they are very happy with the service, value and exposure
they receive
on our Website. You can view our sponsors by visiting any page (other than the
Homepage).
Website address- www.wetwebmedia.com.
We offer two areas for your logo on our website, the right sidebar and the top
border.
The top border spot is larger and is the prime spot for an ad. The rate for
placement on
the top border is $500 per month. The right sidebar is also popular and the
rates for
placement there are only $200 per month. Just send me an example of the logo
that you
wish to place on the site and I will place it there for you to see.
By advertising on the Wetwebmedia website you will be exposed to far more
hobbyist/customers than the number who see your ads in the magazines, at a
fraction of
the cost. Please let me know how you want to proceed and I look forward to
hearing from
you soon. I will also place a link to your Website on Wetwebmedia.com.
Sincerely,
Mike Kaechele

is it possible you can help me. (a website service of different thrust,

Hi i'm a webmaster just getting into the affiliate side of things.
<Like this terminology>
I'm finding it harder to make the same money i use to make.
<I can imagine...>
I own a
portal typ of site and i have signed up to following affiliated sites from
looking
at affiliate directories . I currently have them all advertised on one page
and a banner rotator advertising them equally.
<Do you find those rotations annoying?>
The affiliate sites below
i signed up to them at the first of the month. I have placed beside them what i
made off each one so far from the first of the month.
<Hmm>
I,m looking to find out if there are better affiliates out there that i missed?
if their is ones that i missed can you please tell me wich ones they are and how
much money
they made you this month. we could help each other.
<This list is quite long... to benefit both of us, would you let on to how
you generated your potentials list?>
I currently get 6,000 - 7,000 hits a day to my site.
<Hmm, we have about 2,500 unique ISP sessions per day, 57,790 hits
yesterday>
Again if you have affiliates making more than these ones in a month
please help me out. I have big bandwidth and office bills to pay for ;(
<Hmm, I think I understand you here... from a glimpse at the list below I can
tell you "we" are in different businesses. Our sites offer help,
information, inspiration to folks interested in the aquatic portion of the
living world. Our sponsors (who pay much less than yours, and not for sales
generated) kindly pay for their names/icons/links placement as they deem their
goals to be confluent with ours. Bob Fenner>

Amy,
Bob is 'on safari' in Asia until 12 June. I'm currently tending his mailbox, as
he is continually deluged by aquarium hobbyists desperately seeking his advice.
I'm optimistic that Bob will be pleased to donate his imagery to your scholastic
efforts, given the conditions you have outlined in your letter - but I cannot
really speak for him in this matter.
I'll be sure he sees your email, and I expect you'll here from him directly, as
soon as he is able.

Dear Robert Fenner,
I am writing on behalf of Dr. R.B. Aiken to obtain permission to

The photographs would be incorporated into a searchable database

not be used in any publication, electronic or otherwise or any profit

Re: A new high
Bob,
This is awesome !! The Wetwebmedia is only beginning to get discovered. Pretty
soon we will be talking about 10,000 hits a day. I'm sure of it.
<Yes, very exciting... Do wish I could expand time, get the few hundred
sections on the site that are already "done" and a few thousand more
images... Much fun... and useful... and of course, continue on the "new
content" end... with travel, image, content making with friends like you...
somehow supported by the site>
I am one of the few people who realize and know that you have put thousands of
hours of your time and a bunch of your own money into providing this essential
free service to the hobbyists of the world. When people start to realize just
what this website offers it will gain a reputation as the best site of it's kind
in the industry.
<Thank you Mike... am very sure that most all folks do realize... and are
grateful for the help, sharing>
I'm sure of that too. I can't wait to get my DSL connection up and running so I
can continue to make my moderate contributions to this honorable undertaking. I
have some ideas brewing for easier navigation and a user friendly appearance for
the Wetwebmedia. I am going to try and make it easier for people to find the
wealth of information that is on the site. We will start to see the 1 page views
go down and the multiple pages viewed go up. This thing is just starting to gain
momentum. Talk with you later. Mike

Hello Bob,
My name is Don Burdick. As I am sure you have heard, I have taken over
Flying Fish Express from Eric Silverman as of last Monday.
<Yes, pleased to meet you. Know of your name, That Fish Place, through the

I apologize for taking a week to contact you.
<Can only imagine how busy you've been.>
I have been monitoring the FAQ and both you
and Mike are doing a great job. Your services are important and much
appreciated here at FFX. Because of this I would like to continue
utilizing your services in the same manner Eric did.
<Glad to do so>
I spoke will Mike last week and he mentioned that volume was picking up
over the last month.
<Yes, John (Caskie) asked us to go on with a lowered flat-rate payment for
answering "just FFE's customers) for a while... Mike and I elected/elect to
answer all...>
I would like to monitor the volume for a few months
and then discuss ways to remedy the work load with you guys.
<Very good. Please take a look at the website: www.WetWebMedia.com... and
consider this sort of format, sponsorship for FFExpress.com's purposes... I
developed the site in response to the storm of similar queries I get from
elsewhere. It's much more effective at answering and selling than 911's
intuitive efforts>

payed for, please let me know.
<Only 1k from last month (December), and Eric stated that they (he and John.C)
were responsible to 1/12/01... Can bill you monthly if you'd prefer>
I will also be happy to answer any othe
questions you might have. I look forward to working with you in the
future.
<Are you attending Aquarama this year? The APPMA here in San Diego? The hobby
"conferences" like the Western Marine or MACNA XIII? Will be at these

WWM
I think the WWM is going against the current trend in dot.com failures and
is gaining in popularity. The people who are coming to our site probably can't
believe that we aren't asking them for any money to look at all of the
information on there.
<Yes Mike, because we offer value. Help, information, inspiration... we will
survive. Hopefully the vendor sponsorship of WWM will aid us in continuing to
maintain and build the site... maybe even beer-money! Bob>
The dot-com downturn
We all knew it couldn't last. But even the most foaming-at-the-mouth skeptic
didn't predict just how fast the Net hyper-boom would plummet into a full-scale
dot-com downturn. Suddenly, the ONLY Net business story is a seemingly endless
stream of tales of woe, the layoffs of thousands of workers, hundreds of
millions of dollars scattered to the wind and scads of abandoned plans for world
domination. But for every 10 money-grubbing charlatans who chased after the
get-rich-quick scheme du jour now receiving a delicious comeuppance, there was
at least one real businessperson who is also unfortunately eating dirt today.
Take Toby Lenk, the founder of eToys. Just a year ago, he was the rare Net
entrepreneur who business editors and writers would meet and think:
"Finally! Someone bright with an impressive executive background and idea
that's actually marginally attractive. What parent doesn't want to avoid the
screaming brats at a toy store?" But right in the midst of the Christmas
rush, eToys has announced that it will run out of money in March, face layoffs
and scramble to sell the company. It's enough to make a tech hack nostalgic for
all those excessive launch parties. Yes, the dot-com craze is dead. Long-live
the dot-com craze!
<Cheers, Mike>

Aquacraft, CASH, ME... and WWM
Dear Bob:
<Mike, been a long time, no see. Hope to run into you at Aquarama, APPMA...
elsewhere this year>
1) What are the prices for advertising on your site?
<As posted on the sponsor test page, a nominal $200 for a right shared border
link, and/or $500 a month for the top shared border. Placement on the basis of
first signed/paid up... and lost if the business lets payment lax beyond the
15th of following month>
2) How will you promote your site?
<Good questions, as always... Probably won't advertise per se... We have more
unique TCP/IP sessions per month than FAMA, TFH, AFM, MFM... have subscribers...
Can barely keep up with queries as is...>
3) We currently received over 15,500 hits per months and the count is
growing. We are advertising our site with full page adverts in FAMA and TFH.
<We receive over a million and a half hits a month just to give you an
idea... More than half outside of the US...>
Perhaps we can work a deal where we promote you new site.
<Don't really have the need, desire for this at this point... will bring more
"work" than I (it is just me at this point) can handle content
wise>
4) Our site features Marine Aquarist a quarterly publication.
<Yes, very nice. Have seen it in a few places, on your site... Good idea.>
5) Check our site >> http://www.aquacraft.net/">Aqua Craft®, Inc.
Thank you. Mike Del Prete
<Thanks Mike, and will post this message/thread on our FAQ's page/s. Bob
Fenner>
Re: Aquacraft, CASH, ME... and WWM
Bob:
1) You got 1.5 million hits last month, and you do not advertise?
How is this possible?
<"Hits" I've recently learned are not such a good measure of
"success" for a site... For instance, the number of images on a page,
and pages themselves generally "count" as individual hits... Am not a
computer type Mike (only know a bit out of dire necessity), but the term
"Session" is applied to unique IP address visits for a period (and
pardon my ignorance if I lose you/me here, an IP address on someone's machine
using an ISP like AOL may be counted twice should they log off a system and
re-log on again... Most of WWM's "hits" are "non-page
views"... i.e. the thousands of images there, with many more to go
on...>
2) Aquarama is a 100% waste of money. Show is very small and qualified
buyers do not show up.
<I go about every other time to see friends, take pix, visit facilities, and
go on dive excursions thereabouts ahead and after... Come on out with us.>
3) APPMA is pathetic.
<I agree with much of that sentiment, but what are we (the industry) going to
do? It does stand to reason that some outfit would come about that would purport
to represent the manufacturing end of the trade... And I don't agree with their
exclusivity practices... Such a business, hobby or scientific association should
strive for the opposite (inclusivity), but am going to show up as it is in San
Diego (!) and a dear friend, Pablo Tepoot of New Life is exhibiting...>
Mike Del Prete
<Be chatting my friend. And hopefully leasing you more exposure for less
money than you've ever! Bob Fenner, www.WetWebMedia.com>
