Marine, some rarely in freshwater. Usually left handed/eyed. Have pelvic fin bases that are short, pectoral fin rays branched. Eggs with only a single oil globule (diagnostic character). About sixteen genera, eighty five species.  Polyphyletic. 

Paralichthys californicus (Ayres 1859), the California Flounder (Halibut). Eastern Pacific; Washington to Baja California. Recorded to more than five feet and 33 kg. in weight. This twenty pound or so one at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
