The Characid/Tetra Fishes, family Characidae,  Subfamily Crenuchinae

Northern South America. 2 genera (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), 3 species.

Crenuchus spilurus Gunther 1863, the Sailfin Tetra. South America; Guianas, Orinoco and Amazonas Basins. To 5.7 cm. in length. pH 5.5-6.5, dH to 5, temp. 24-28 C. A solitary, predatory species that lives on insect larvae and crustaceans in the wild. Males guard the nest of about one hundred eggs spawned on a rock or plant leaf. Aquarium photo.
