DIY Canister Saltwater Safe?   9/26/12
Hi,
Just a quick question.
I've found plans to build a mini canister filter out of an Otterbox that is made of ABS plastic that's reinforced with fiberglass. The person who came up with the idea for this filter has been using it for many years on his freshwater planted tank with apparently no problems but I have a saltwater tank and don't know if the saltwater would cause it to corrode, leaching toxins into the tank. What do you think?

I found a different container with better dimensions that's made of polypropylene. I've been researching polypropylene-use for the aquarium hobby and every message board I came across,  everyone agreed that polypropylene was aquarium safe. Then I found this article:

s?. Within the article it states that polypropylene leaches quaternary ammonium biocides & oleamide and for this reason one should avoid using this material since its unknown weather or not its harmful to aquatic life.
Do you think it should be okay to use?
<Am... very surprised... as I've always advocated that Polypropylene was very safe to use... and also am a strong supporter of Quality Marine...
Have read over the article, and I still don't know, though this soft thermoplastic is used extensively  in containing foods (yogurt, ketchup...) and medicines... Safe to me. BobF>

You make a very valid point!  Guess I never thought of it that way.
I just got swayed by a local fish shop.  The guy said he used to carry Fluval canisters and had so many people complain about leaks he quit carrying them.

He is the reason for my phobia I guess.  He seemed to know what he was talking about and being out of the hobby for about 25 years I didn't question him.
In your opinion is the Eheim or Magnum designed better than the Fluval as far as leaking possibilities?

I just looked at an Eheim ecco pro.  I really like the design of the impeller and the oring that seals the top.  This looks like a much better seal than the Fluval I was looking at.

Is the new ECCO a better design than the classic with the outlet on the bottom?  Sorry, I just don't know much about these things.

I was looking at a new Eheim ECCO Pro.  The design looks really good and I like the top o'ring seal.  Looks better than the Fluval.  Have you heard anything bad about them as far as leaking etc?

I guess the reason I ask about the ECCO vs. Classic is the lower flow rate on the ECCO.  And it appear there may be a bypass issue on the ECCO?  Just some things I've read.

The bypass is not an issue but allows water flow to the tank in the event the filter becomes clogged.
